In March 2011, Lynne Van Luven launched the Coastal Spectator, an online arts review based out of Victoria. It originally served as a platform for her students to publish works they had produced in one of her classes. The website took off and published hundreds of articles between 2011 and 2015.
Launch forward to 2017. Aleesha Koersen, an undergrad student in the UVic writing department, and Sarah A.C. Hamill, a grad student in the same department, were hired to revive the Coastal Spectator. After multiple meetings and a decision to veer away from the Coastal Spectator’s original platform, Saltern was born.
So, here we are, a brand spanking new online magazine seeking to publish the best in CNF, poetry, and reviews (not to forget our beloved Coastal Spectator).
